  Having never met Dr. Spisak after having two appointments at her office, I cannot really comment on her other than to say that I've corresponded with her twice via messaging on their patient portal. I am leaving her practice because we are moving but likely wouldn't have stuck around much longer anyway. The nurses and the staff of River District Women's Health are actually wonderful--very sweet and patient, also prompt in responding to any questions. However, the only person I saw there was not a doctor but a midwife, JoJean Hamilton (CNM). My husband had called the office ahead of my first prenatal appointment to see if they were experienced in caring for patients who are survivors of sexual assault, as I am, and who have trouble basically with being touched at all. They assured him they'd dealt with it before. I was happy with how Hamilton heeded what I told her to do and not to do during an examination. All went as well as it could have. Overall, though, I find her to be sort of terse and cold, and also in a hurry (at my second appointment, she couldn't keep up with all my questions). Since I am in a high-risk pregnancy, I was sent to an MFM at St. John Hospital Detroit (Dr. Shyla Vengalil--wonderful doc!), and she came up with the entire game plan for my care, including medication safe to take for my PTSD/panic attacks. Spisak refused to refill the medication when I was unable to get into a psychiatrist (yes, pawned out to another specialist yet again!) to make sure the meds continued. So they were willing to allow a lapse in my medication that could've cause serious problems for me and my baby, even though the doctor THEY sent me to had very clearly explained and OK'd the medication. I instead got a refill from Dr. Vengalil to last me through my last month in the area until I could find a psychiatrist in my new city or nearby. I was astounded that Spisak did not wish to heed what a high-risk specialist had OK'd for me, was even willing to possibly let it lapse, especially a medication that is so commonly taken. She was on vacation at the time of my second appointment and was unresponsive. She also "informed me" that it's "not the best drug for anxiety" which I strongly disagree with as it has been the one and only medication that HAS worked for me in the past, but at a more therapeutic dose. Just another instance of a doctor not listening to their patient or giving them the time of day. Spisak doesn't even provide a number to call after hours in case of emergencies or concerns. This coupled with the fact that I never saw her or a "real" doctor raised red flags for me that she is overextending herself and doesn't have time for even her high-risk patients. I do not recommend Spisak's practice to anyone. I wasn't super impressed with how they handled my problems (apparently they are unable to handle even a simple case of prescribing anxiety medication, and anxiety is a common issue--that's alarming to me!), and I was actually astonished and angry with how they were wiling to ignore a specialist's recommendation--a specialist SHE sent me to. Absolutely ridiculous. If you are pregnant, especially in a high-risk pregnancy, please do not bother with River District Women's Health (again, the staff are wonderful but the people that care for you are OK at best, neglectful at worst). They cannot handle you and you won't even MEET the doctor you came there for. Instead, find a great hospital you are willing to give birth in, find out which OBs and specialists are affiliated with it, and try to see them instead.
